Our Company

Banyan Massage is a well-established, peaceful and professional massage therapy studio located within the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Banyan Drive. We are a team of experienced and licensed professionals focused on providing comprehensive quality care. We are committed to supporting our clients in their health maintenance and long- term wellness goals. This thriving massage practice has been owned and operated by Anne Nuttall and Melissa Cardwell since 2008 when we came together as good friends with a shared vision. Our mission is to provide extraordinarily compassionate and skilled massage therapy to each person who walks through our doors. Over the many years, we have built a strong team of highly skilled massage practitioners and have established a wide range of clientele whose needs are equally varied and diverse. All of us here believe in the profoundly healing benefits of massage therapy and have witnessed the positive effects particularly in the clients with whom we’ve established long-standing relationships. We understand that each person is a unique individual with his or her own specific needs. We are committed to addressing each person’s challenges and goals so as to be powerful allies in health and healing. Our aspiration is to provide a calm and therapeutic space in which you can relax and rejuvenate in the midst of your busy life.

Melissa Cardwell, LMT #8868
Co-Owner of Banyan Massage

melissaMelissa moved to the Big Island of Hawaii in 2002 after receiving her B.A. from Oberlin College in Ohio. After a few years in social work, she decided to pursue Massage Therapy and attended the Big Island Academy of Massage. After completing her apprenticeship at Island Therapeutic Massage and receiving her massage license in 2005, she worked at a number of places including Kalani Honua in Puna, Mauna Kea Resort and Kona Day Spa, Olena’s in Hilo and Kulaniapia Bed and Breakfast. She finally arrived at Banyan Massage where she teamed up with Anne in 2008 to establish a thriving massage practice.

Melissa considers herself an on-going student and, as such, continuously seeks to deepen her massage practice. She offers a wide-range of modalities including Deep Tissue, Lomi Lomi, Hawaiian Hot Stones Massage (Pohaku Wela), Pre-Natal Massage, Cranial Sacral and Myofascial Release. Melissa also received her Level I in Reiki and is currently a devoted Ashtanga Yoga student. Though she has experience in the spa industry, her passion is therapeutic massage and assisting people in improving the quality of their lives. Melissa strongly believes in having an unconditional regard for her clients and seeks to support them by drawing from her deep well of knowledge and compassion. Every session is unique and based on an individual’s particular and distinct needs. Melissa feels tremendously grateful to have found a professional path that is as rewarding as Massage Therapy and to be a part of the phenomenal team of therapists at Banyan Massage.

Anne(*Anne is currently living off-island)

Anne moved to the Big Island of Hawaii in 2003 after graduating from Massage Therapy school in Boulder, Colorado. She completed Hawaiian Lomi Lomi training at Aunty Margaret Machados’ in 2004 and became a Hawaii Licensed Massage Therapist shortly thereafter. She continued her education and was employed at the Hawaiian Islands School of Massage in Kona where she studied Medical Massage, Hawaiian Hot Stones Massage (Pohaku Wela) and Thai Massage. She also worked as an Administrator, Student Counselor and Massage Clinic Manager. In 2008 Anne came together with Melissa as Co-Owner of Banyan Massage.

Anne specializes in Integrative Massage, Lomi Lomi and Deep Therapeutics applying techniques such as Myofascial Release, Acupressure, Trigger Point Therapy and Joint Mobilization. Her sessions are always customized to each individual’s specific needs and she takes great care in providing a personalized experience for every client. She has a kind and nurturing presence and an open heart. With a deep passion for massage and bodywork Anne feels very fortunate to be a professional in the field and to be a part of the team at Banyan Massage.



Ariel Tergeoglou , LMT#6106

arielBorn and raised in Hawaii, Ariel received her massage license in 2000 from The Big Island Academy of Massage and a B.A. from the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 2006. Her massage therapy work since then includes a wide range. She has experience in medical massage, working closely with physical therapists and chiropractors on specific pain management issues. She has also worked in luxury hotels and B&B’s providing a more relaxation style massage. She offers a unique blend of bodywork designed to both relax and mend the aches and pains caused by our daily lives. She incorporates Lomi Lomi, Trigger Point Therapy, Deep Tissue, Hot Stones and a host of other modalities. Ariel is very passionate about her field. She nurtures this passion by maintaining a sense of balance in her everyday life through things like surfing and hanging out with her family. Ariel is clear and present, and always ready with a smile for everyone she meets.

Ellen Schomer ,LMT#13598

ellenEllen has lived on the Big Island for over 20 years and has loved it even longer. She graduated from the Costa Rica School of Massage Therapy in 2007 and feels blessed to have found this very fulfilling work. Her style is a flowing, integrative mix of various modalities including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Lomi Lomi, Sports Massage, Myofascial Release, Thai, Shiatsu, Cranial Sacral, Reiki, Reflexology, Neuromuscular Therapy and Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy. Those who like deep work especially appreciate her understanding and ability, though she can also deliver more gentle work. Ellen’s clients feel compassion, mindfulness and attention to detail when receiving one of her very thorough massages. When she’s not working she enjoys the ocean, gardening and hanging with her dog, Patches.

Lori Pusateri , LMT#12716

loriLori considers herself a lifelong student of massage and wellness and enjoys combining many modalities into her sessions. After first becoming a Yoga Teacher and learning the art of Thai Yoga Massage at the Denver Integrative Massage School in 2009, Lori continued her massage studies at Waimea’s Hokulani Massage Academy in 2011. She will soon be proudly completing her Masters of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as well. Lori enjoys creating a custom and focused massage for each client with styles ranging from soothing Lomi Lomi, Hot Stones and Aromatherapy to Deep Therapeutics, Myofascial Release and Acupressure points. When she’s not happily working, Lori loves spending time in Hawaii’s beautiful ocean and forests and reading one of the books on her ever-growing list.

 

Julia Frerichs, LMT#12275

Julia has been practicing massage since 2007. Her career began in Canada where she completed a comprehensive 2 year training program. Since then her work has taken her across the continent, practicing in therapy clinics as well as high end spas. She specializes in therapeutic work, blending slow deep tissue with relaxing Swedish techniques. She is happy to incorporate stretching into your session as well as show you exercises you can do at home so the benefits of your session last even longer. She is specially trained in pregnancy massage and loves to help her clients with pre and post natal therapy.

Danielle Pacific Doula, RYT, LMT# 13717

Danielle moved to the Big Island from Chicago in 2014 and has been practicing massage therapy since 2007. She is also a yoga instructor and doula. She joins Banyan Massage on occasion to help address the healing needs of the Hilo community there. She provides Clinical massage, Lymphatic Drainage, as well as Relaxation and Prenatal massage.
